A few words about real UK charcoal

Charcoal is an important element in a successful barbecue. Some charcoal on the market today is not up to much, it might be convenient to buy it from you local shop or petrol station but will it light easily and stay hot for the duration of your event? Charcoal has been made in the U.K. for 4,000 years evidence that it started by 2,300 BC has been found on the south downs where bronze age man was using charcoal, which was needed to smelt copper ores at high enough temperatures to produce bronze. The U.K. only produces about 5% of its charcoal requirement the rest 95% is imported; this cannot be right.

U.K. hardwood is of a better quality than some imported species and our charcoal is made by sustain ably produced materials. Charcoal burning is not the only answer for woodland management but it is a valuable option that should be considered, we currently import well over 50,000 tonnes of charcoal each year, this is some 250,000 tonnes of green wood annually. We need to link the unmanaged woodland resource to this potential market.

The timber for our charcoal is extracted by our team of heavy horses. The grading and bagging of our charcoal is all done by hand which is a really dusty an dirty part of the operation but must be done to eliminate charcoal dust in the bag. You will find that a bag of most commercial charcoal today is largely made up of charcoal dust! The timber for our charcoal is extracted by our team of heavy horses. The timber we use is from a sustainable woodland management program
and is air dry ed for 18 months before we start making charcoal from it. It takes between six and eight tonnes of timber to produce one tonne of charcoal.
